  • School of Skilled Trades

Previous Next Central New Mexico Community College School of Skilled Trades Albuquerque, NM EST. 2023 The School of Skilled Trades at CNM is a design collaboration with Architekton from Phoenix, AZ and included an initial curriculum analysis that examined market and pedagogy trends in skilled trades education. The six-month intensive visioning and programming effort focused on the impact of industry on education and how we can establish a curriculum to enhance that partnership and reestablish trades careers as a lucrative and highly-respected career path. The result of this process was a multi-phase, multibuilding project to create an interdisciplinary hub for skilled trades education that links everything from carpentry to welding in Phase I. Planning for Phase II included linking this infrastructure future programs such as architecture, surveying, and machine tooling. A significant part of this vision included the future of automotive trades education and focused on everything from diesel technologies to electric and driver-less vehicle maintenance. The Phase I program (to be completed in 2024) consists of a 59,300 sf building to house 32,330 sf of labs, 10 classrooms, and academic support spaces, and office space. The labs are designed with the future in mind and are created with the infrastructure put in place so that they can adapt to evolving needs of program and curriculum. • Belen Family School | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Belen Consolidated Schools Belen Family School Belen, NM 2015 The Belen Family School is an alternative school that serves 1st through 8th grade. Created in 1994, its mission is to allow home school students to participate in school wide activities and provide a strong connection of curriculum and instruction between home and school. The program provides the opportunity for students to learn with multiage, heterogeneous & cooperative learning groups. Having had seven different homes over the life of the program, its new and permanent home is east of downtown Belen, situated between the railyard and the Rio Grande Bosque in a quiet, mixed-use neighborhood. • Bandelier Elementary School | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Albuquerque Public Schools Bandelier Elementary School Albuquerque, NM 2008 The addition and renovation of Bandelier Elementary School provided a larger kitchen and cafeteria for the school, as well as a new technology lab and small addition to the media center. Also included in this project was construction of a new loading dock, dumpster enclosure, and replacement of windows throughout the entire building. Facades for the addition were designed to complement the existing building, which was originally constructed in 1939. The client had originally intended to demolish the entire northwest corner of the school and build an entirely new full-service kitchen, cafeteria and tech lab. After evaluating the budget and the existing conditions, however, we determined that the best way to get all the new spaces and features the school needed was by renovating the existing cafeteria and only constructing an addition for the new kitchen and tech lab. We reconfigured interior spaces for better efficiency and function, and added new finishes and fixtures as well as a platform in the cafeteria. The final result is a clean, updated space that blends the existing school with the new addition. Previous Next

  • Escalante Mid-High School | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Chama Valley Independent Schools Escalante Mid-High School Tierra Amarilla, NM 2008 This project incorporated a small existing school into the construction of a new mid-high school for the Chama Valley. A new commons area/cafeteria uses high ceilings, a full wall of windows, and exposed trusses to create a dramatic multi-purpose space for the relatively small school. Clerestory windows running the length of the corridors bring light into the depths of the building. A significant challenge was coordinating all demolition and new construction work in a way that allowed the school to remain operable throughout all phases of construction. Despite the challenges, we worked very closely with the school administration and the contractor to ensure the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Previous Next

  • Cuba High School | Vigil & Associates

Previous Next Cuba Independent School District Cuba High School Cuba, NM 2008 Originally built in 1957, the Cuba High School building as well as the Vo-Tech building were renovated and expanded to create a fresh and efficient school for the community. A bold, contemporary entrance defines the updated school and with its new kitchen and science labs addition; new HVAC and electrical systems; new roofing, and replacing interior finishes, doors and windows. The renovated Vo-Tech building now features a business lab, computer lab and automotive shop, complete with two welding stations. Consideration for the younger ninth grade students is reflected in a separate classroom wing, and careful planning was put into the classroom features for special education. The goal of bringing daylight to the interior was accomplished with larger windows and translucent panels added to the Multi-Purpose Room and throughout the building. Prior to renovation, the parking lot was unorganized and did not function to meet safety requirements. New site work created a separate bus loop, parent drop-off and student parking areas, alleviating morning congestion. The project also includes structural repairs, a new roof, and restroom renovations to the Gymnasium facility on campus as well as completion of a fire protection loop and adequate water conditioning to reduce the corrosive effects on plumbing system serving the entire district.
